Doctor accused of sexual abuse in Rio has professional registration suspended

Doctor Emilio Pontes da Fonseca Junior, aged 31, accused of committing sexual rape against patients at a health center in Mangaratiba, on the Costa Verde of Rio de Janeiro, had his professional registration suspended as a precautionary measure. The decision is from the Court of Justice and was confirmed by the CNN by the Public Ministry.

In the early afternoon of this Thursday (30), the Regional Council of Medicine of Rio (Cremerj) informed that it had not yet been notified of the decision but that it would be complied with as soon as notification arrived. The council added that it opened an inquiry to investigate the case, which remains confidential.

Fonseca Junior’s custody hearing is scheduled for early this afternoon, in order to determine whether the doctor will respond to the case in prison or freedom.

How it all happened

The doctor was arrested on Wednesday (29) in a health unit in Duque de Caxias, in Baixada Fluminense. According to investigations by the Public Ministry of Rio de Janeiro, the accused carried out lewd acts against two patients on December 30, 2022. The crimes allegedly took place inside the Vereador Orlando Ribeiro Basic Unit, in Muriqui, where Emílio worked.

The complaint states that the victims, who presented different symptoms – one case of an anxiety attack and another of diarrhea – were taken by the doctor to a place away from the nursing team. There, the health professional asked the women to undress and lie down on their stomachs.

The police also carried out search and seizure warrants and collected medication and a cell phone from Emilio’s car. The doctor will be prosecuted for the crimes of sexual rape through fraud, aggravated by the fact that it was committed against sick people.
