During the World Sleep Week, pulmonologist Geraldo Lorenzi Filho, director of the Incor Sleep Laboratory, shared valuable information on melatonin use and their effects on sleep quality. In an interview with CNN, the expert addressed important questions about this hormone, which has gained popularity as a supplement to sleep problems.
According to Lorenzi, one of the main advantages of melatonin is its safety. “The great advantage is that melatonin is not bad,” said the expert, reassuring those who consider his use. However, he stressed that, despite being safe, the effectiveness of melatonin as a sleep -inductor is not as significant as many believe.
Function and limitations of melatonin
The expert explained that melatonin is a hormone naturally produced by the body at night, when there is less brightness, signaling that it is time to bed. However, Lorenzi warned that taking melatonin while remaining exposed to the light of electronic devices can nullify its effects: “You take melatonin and stay on your cell phone, connect with that light, won’t work, won’t help.”
As for effectiveness, the doctor indicated that, in general, melatonin has a small effect on sleep induction. He mentioned that it may be more beneficial for elderly with low exposure to light, but should not be considered a miraculous solution to sleep problems.
Lorenzi emphasized that melatonin “can help maintain a favorable internal environment for sleep,” but is not a direct inductor. He also warned about the placebo effect, suggesting that many people may feel benefits simply because they believe in the effectiveness of the supplement.
Finally, the expert stressed the importance of considering daily habits and lifestyle by addressing sleep problems rather than depending exclusively on supplements. “We need to talk a lot more about your day, your habits, than get there and say ‘now I’m going to turn off the key.’ This doesn’t work,” Lorenzi concluded, highlighting the need for a more holistic approach to improving sleep quality.
