In the noble hall of the Brazilian Academy of Letters (ABL), in downtown Rio, doctor Paulo Niemeyer Filho was sworn in this Friday (27) as the new occupant of chair number 12 of the effective membership. He was elected to fill the vacancy of Professor Alfredo Bosi, who died in April 2021.
“It is a great honor to be part of this group. In 125 years of Academia, only 265 Brazilians have had this honor. So I couldn’t be more pleased and honored. The Academy is a selection of people representing different cultural areas. I feel here as a representative of the area of science, of the medical area. I feel honored to be part of such a select group of intellectuals”, said the new immortal.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by the ministers of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Luiz Fux and Luís Roberto Barroso, who highlighted the importance of science and medicine.
“I think the valorization of science and medicine has a very important symbolic role in this time, often of obscurantism, of denialism.” Minister Barroso added: “We honor knowledge that is based on study, experimentation, verification. I am a science enthusiast in general.”
The STF minister, Luís Roberto Barroso, classified Paulo Niemeyer Filho as an exponent of medicine who followed his father’s path. The magistrate valued the tribute.
“Paulo Niemeyer’s appointment, although symbolically a tribute to science, is a tribute to a great professional, a remarkable surgeon who followed a family tradition, saved many lives”.
Paulo Niemeyer Filho was born on April 9, 1952, in Rio de Janeiro. Son of Paulo Niemeyer Soares and Maria Pia Rafaela Guilhermina Alice Torres Guimarães, he graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) in 1975.
He is currently Medical Director of the Paulo Niemeyer State Brain Institute and Member of the Board of the Cancer Foundation. On the occasion of his candidacy as a Titular Member of the National Academy of Medicine, he presented a memoir entitled “Experience with Surgery of Intracranial Aneurysms of the Posterior Fossa”.
