A member of the Navy since 1995, doctor Gisele Mendes de Souza e Mello was hit in the head by a stray bullet this Tuesday morning (10) during an event that took place inside the Hospital Naval Marcílio Dias, in Lins de Vasconcelos, in the area north of Rio de Janeiro.
According to the Navy, Gisele is currently undergoing surgery and her condition is serious.
The doctor specializes in geriatrics and works as health superintendent at Marcílio Dias Hospital – the same place where she was shot with a gunshot.
The professional graduated in medicine in 1993 from the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Unirio). She has been validly registered with the Federal Council of Medicine (CFM) since 1994, with the title of specialist in geriatrics.
According to the federal government’s Transparency Portal, Gisele joined the public service in 1995. She currently holds the rank of sea captain. This is the last rank before the designation of rear admiral – the first within the general officer classification.
Before working in Rio de Janeiro, Gisele was director of the Hospital Naval de Brasília.
In September last year, the doctor was sent to a mission in Switzerland. She participated in the 11th Military Medical Ethics Course and the 23rd International Law Course
of Armed Conflicts, in the city of Spiez.
In 2010, Gisele presented a monograph whose theme was “Management of the Home Care Service at the Marcílio Dias Naval Hospital” – the same place where, 14 years later, she would be shot with a firearm.
How was the case
The doctor was shot in the head this Tuesday morning. According to the Rio de Janeiro Military Police, she was shot while an operation by the Lins Pacification Police Unit (UPP) was taking place.
“When in the Gambá Community, police officers were attacked by criminals. Later, the unit command received information about an injured victim inside Marcílio Dias Hospital”, says the PM. The Civil Police are investigating the case.
The Navy says it “regrets what happened and sympathizes with the soldier’s friends and family and informs that it is providing all the necessary support to ensure her prompt recovery.”
