Last week, a new unusual situation went viral on TikTok. A Colombian doctor removed a cockroach from the ear of a patient who complained of ear pain.
The record of the moment was shared by the professional Paula Avalos, who is in residence at the Departmental Hospital of Villavicencio, in Meta, Colombia. “Malditas cockroaches”, she wrote in the caption of the publication, which already has about 2.1 million views, more than 11 thousand comments and 40 thousand likes until this Saturday (2).
Right at the beginning of the images, it is possible to identify the insect inside the patient’s ear. With metallic tweezers, the doctor removes the cockroach after a failed attempt.

How to act in similar situations?
Individuals often seek medical attention due to the presence of foreign objects inside the ear, nose, or throat. While most incidents have minor developments or even cause no problems, some cases can trigger serious complications.
The otorhinolaryngologist Igor Guerra explained to CNN that it is necessary to pay attention to two possibilities of foreign body in the ear, namely: inanimate, in the case of objects such as screws, balls, beads, and animated, such as insects.
For situations involving inanimate bodies, there is no otorhinolaryngological urgency, unlike an animated body, which requires caution, attention and even prompt care.
“Because they are moving in the auditory canal, the pain is intense and practically unbearable, since the region is very vascularized. There are even chances of tympanic membrane perforations, in addition to severe damage to hearing, such as deafness ”, he explains.
If it happens, the specialist says that an immediate form of action is to put liquid vaseline in the ear so that the insect stops moving. “Vaseline will immobilize the moving animal, causing it to stop scratching the auditory canal wall. With that, when turning the head, the animated body will be able to drain and leave the region. However, if this does not happen, it is necessary to seek urgent care”.
The doctor also says that an important point to consider is when the foreign body is inserted in the nose. “Regardless of whether it is an animate or inanimate body, it is always an emergent situation, as there is the possibility of the individual aspirating and going to the lungs”, he explains.
