Doctors recover bodies buried in Gaza hospital after Israeli operation

Palestinian doctors search the courtyard of the Al-Shifa medical complex, in northern Gaza, looking for bodies of those missing after the Israeli attack that destroyed the hospital – hoping to identify the dead and find the missing this Monday (8).

After a two-week operation against suspected fighters, which resulted in a desert of charred buildings, Israel withdrew its troops from Al-Shifa on Monday (1) and Palestinian medical teams and families returned to the site in search of human remains.

Maha Sweilam, whose husband worked at Al-Shifa during the operation, sifted through piles of broken concrete while an excavator removed blocks of sand nearby.

Sweilam said she and her husband, both doctors, were separated. She doesn't know what happened to him.

Another Palestinian searching for relatives, Nabil Abed, said his father was killed and on Monday he went to the hospital hoping to identify his body.

Israel said it killed hundreds of Hamas fighters who were hiding there. Hamas and medical staff deny that fighters were present.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said that only 10 of Gaza's 36 hospitals are still able to function, even partially.
