Two days of doctors’ strike: 1st and 2nd March. The protest was initiated by the Italian medical unions (Smi) and by the Italian local doctors’ union (Simet). Family doctors, medical guards, doctors of the territorial health emergency and medical doctors of the adhering services stop. They could skip visits and appointments. Only emergencies are guaranteed. Doctors report unsustainable workloads and a lack of safeguards.
A demonstration at the Ministry of Health is also scheduled for Wednesday 2 March. “With Ukraine in the heart, doctors confirm strike and national demonstration. In solidarity, placards on peace will be displayed to request an end to the conflict ”.
“Full solidarity with the medical colleagues of the affiliated area who today manifest the profound discomfort in the exercise of the profession” said the president of Fnomceo, the National Federation of Medical Orders, Filippo Anelli. This unease “is the inevitable consequence of the abnormal, often improper workloads that the pandemic has caused”.
These new workloads “grafted onto a model of territorial assistance that proved to be lacking the staff, administrative and nursing, which would always have been necessary, and even more so in this pandemic. The choices made in the past by decision makers are the result of a culture that considered healthcare to be a cost to be compressed and health an expense to be contained. The consequences have affected citizens and doctors themselves, left alone to assist the more than 12 million people who have contracted the Covid“.
The requests are concrete: holidays, maternity, sickness. “We demand certain safeguards in matters of support for handicaps and substitutions in order to benefit from the well-deserved rest, as well as serious policies on equal opportunities“. The most affected, even in this profession, were women. The doctors also protest against “the aberrant bureaucracy and not least the lack of compensation for the families of colleagues who died from Covid (There will be a minute of silence for them, ed). A slap in the face, by the state, especially to the orphans of those doctors “, explains a note.
This is the request of the doctors: «We want to regain possession of our role and ours professional dignity in order to best treat the patients who have entrusted themselves to us ». More doctors are needed in the area: today in our country there are more than three million citizens without a family doctor. “The medical guard posts are either closed or merged due to lack of staff. 118 ambulances are without a doctor on board. We want young doctors to be attracted to this profession, which today desert as well as old people who retire early. The institution of a specialization course in general medicine is now unavoidable ».
