Doctors Without Borders says it has lost contact with its staff inside the Gaza Strip’s largest health center, al-Shifa Hospital, amid reports of “heavy shelling” near the complex.
“In the last few hours, attacks against al-Shifa Hospital have intensified dramatically. The team [dos Médicos Sem Fronteiras] from the hospital reported a catastrophic situation inside,” the humanitarian group said in a post on X, formerly Twitter, at 3:43 am (Gaza time) on Friday (10).
The group said it was extremely concerned about the safety of staff and patients at al-Shifa Hospital, some of whom were in critical condition and unable to move or evacuate.
“There is a patient who needs surgery. There is a patient who is already sleeping in our department. We cannot evacuate and [deixar] those people inside. As a doctor, I vow to help people who need help,” said Mohammed Obeid, a surgeon at the hospital.

Communications inside Gaza have periodically dropped since Israel’s military campaign began last month – often as a result of power outages or widespread network outages.
Hospital attacks
There have been reports of Israeli attacks near al-Shifa Hospital, with hospital officials and the Hamas-controlled Palestinian Ministry of Health in Ramallah publishing videos that appear to show heavy shelling of the area around the complex.
A spokesman for the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Friday that al-Shifa was “under bombardment”, adding that 20 hospitals in the Gaza Strip were “out of action”.
Asked about a potential Israeli airstrike on al-Shifa hospital on Friday, WHO spokeswoman Margaret Harris told a briefing: “I don’t have details about al-Shifa, but we know they are being bombed.”
The Israeli military claimed that a “missed projectile launched by terrorist organizations inside the Gaza Strip” was responsible for an earlier attack on the hospital.
The news comes a week after Israel attacked an ambulance outside the hospital, killing at least 15 people and injuring 50 others. Israeli authorities said the vehicle was being used by Hamas.
Israel accuses Hamas of inserting itself into civilian infrastructure and has said it will attack the radical Islamic group “whenever necessary.”
