Doctors Without Borders: “The situation in Gaza is catastrophic. No one is safe”

International NGOs with doctors warned yesterday about the health situation in the Gaza Strippounded by the Israeli military after the Hamas attack on Saturday, demanding a humanitarian corridor for the transport of medical aid and respect for humanitarian law. “The situation is catastrophic … I don’t believe anyone is safe in Gaza,” said Sarah Sato, head of the Palestine program at the Doctors Without Borders (MSF). At this point for 20 years, MSF counts 300 Palestinians and 20 foreign workers. “We moved part of our teams to a United Nations building. The bombings are so massive that the risks are too great,” he added.

The Israeli army has been shelling the Gaza Strip since Saturday, which has been controlled by Hamas since 2007, in response to an unprecedented scale attack by the Palestinian Islamist organization against the state of Israel, as reported by APE-MPE

Israel, which announced the evacuation of the border areas, imposed “total siege” in the Gaza Strip and ordered the “immediate interruption” of water supplies to the Palestinian enclave, following the interruption of electricity and food supplies. Hamas, which has controlled the enclave since 2007, has for its part threatened to execute hostages kidnapped in Israel, around 150 people including children, women and youths who were taken while participating in a music festival. “With the status of full siege, how long can our groups last? We need a humanitarian corridor to support medical aid, bring equipment, replace our teams on the scene“, said Sato.

The NGO Doctors of the World, which counts about 30 members in the West Bank and about 20 in Gaza, also issued a warning: “The transport of patients has been reduced by the blockade, the intensity of the shelling. Our team’s survival is at stakeit is very difficult for them to be able to carry out their work,” said Dr. Jean-Francois Corti, the NGO’s vice president, noting that “80% of the population depends on humanitarian aid.”
