The documentary “Milton Bituca Nascimento “, Which portrays the backstage of the last tour of the iconic Mineiro singer, hits theaters on Thursday (20). The goal, according to director Flavia Moraes, was that fans could have the experience of traveling with Milton.
“In terms of narrative, we had a search to try to decipher this artist and understand this artist while we followed him on the trip,” Moraes explained to CNN . “And everything that happened on the trip was side doors so that we explored a subject, an interviewee, or something we had not foreseen. When you do a documentary, you usually start from an idea and end up making a totally different movie. Here, it happens in a way, but not so much – Because the master concept is to follow Milton, He as our main subject. ”
“It’s not a factual, chronological documentary and bringing information about his life or history – the idea was a more sensory documentary than we could give a gift to fans that is the experience of traveling with Milton,” he continued. “The movie was made on the road and at first the idea was this. We followed Milton and took the movie to accompany him on the trip, is a very clear cut of this farewell tour.”
Also according to Moraes, the goal was to show Milton Nascimento’s perception as an artist “who defines Brazil, an artist who represents deep Brazil”. “I think we talk a lot about the end and we question what the end is, using the figure we consider that it is an immortal of Brazilian popular music; we talk exactly about it: what is the end for category artists of this size?”
“I think there is this question, the question of the discussion of the end of the last tour, but many other layers that are subtle, but that are there. The idea of portraying Milton as a portrait of deep Brazil, of coming to seek its explanation in nature – if it can be explained,” he said.
Music director Victor Pozas stressed that one of the concerns was to introduce Milton to a generation that doesn’t know him so well. “There is also a concern to see him singing at his peak, not only now when he is older,” he told CNN . “It was concerned with him to appear at the height. The selection was very much because of the edition. As it was necessary to tell the stories, then I would choose what would play at that time.”
“Dealing with such a rich and vast repertoire, [ter que] Leaving hundreds of songs from outside was very complex. It was a tremendous privilege [fazer o filme]perhaps the greatest privilege I’ve ever had in my life, ”said Pozas.
Director Flavia Moraes recognized the film not only as a privilege: “It is a huge responsibility, but before a great responsibility is a privilege, because being able to make a movie about it, to portray Milton and to choose music, to choose from his vast work the songs that would be part of the movie, is an absolute privilege. ”
“Of course it has the responsibility and this responsibility especially at the beginning of the process is distressing. I really lost nights of sleep thinking ‘how am I going to put all the pieces of this puzzle in the movie? What choices do?’ But Milton had a lot of generosity, he made us very comfortable that these choices were artistic and natural, ”he said.
About the question if an artist as big as Milton can indeed end, the film tries to respond with the vision of the eternity of art. “The film ends with this new generation of new artists and composers, that artist like Milton does not end – the new artists will carry Milton ahead “Said Flavia Moraes.
