Highly revealing (and useful in this sense) was yesterday’s debate of the political leaders in the Parliament with the mural of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, mainly because it shed light on half-truths and fragmentary statements that darkened the positions of the official opposition on its attitude towards bestiality currently in full swing in Ukraine.
Finally, to what extent does Alexis Tsipras disagree with the attitude of the Greek government towards the events? The strong opposition that has been underlined since Saturday over government actions, concerned the defense mission material in Ukraine from Greece under the fear (of SYRIZA) that it irritates the Russian nostrils and in any case puts the country in trouble by involving it in the war.
He makes it “part of the war”, as the leader of the official opposition said characteristically yesterday in a softer statement of the accusations that his party attributes to the Government of N.D.
A line that “softened” after the placements of Mr. Tsipras in Parliament, concluding with the following: We have obligations as members of the EU and NATO, we should obviously fulfill them but not rush on our own, if we are not asked.
SYRIZA is neither anti-Eastern nor anti-EU, after all. Mr. Tsipras clarified this, adding more to the equation: “We are neither pro-Russian nor anti-Russian, neither pro-American nor anti-American. We are Greeks, we are Europeans, we are in accordance with International Law.”
In fact, in response to the impression that SYRIZA is “pro-Putin” due to its reaction to the sending of military equipment to Ukraine, its president hastened to recall that in his day, the government had expelled Russian diplomats, then experiencing the criticisms of the N.D. as opposition: “We did not call you pro-Russian then. We told you irresponsible. But not pro-Russian”.
The “nails” in EU-Allies and the dialogue with Erdogan
Prior to the discussion of the Ukrainian political leaders, which was requested by the Prime Minister in order to inform the national delegation about the developments in Ukraine, he had create a tug of war between government and official opposition : Is there a national line with concern for the Greek interests at the base of our alliances or are ND and SYRIZA two parallel worlds that will never meet even in the Nationals?
The Prime Minister unequivocally explained that in addition to our principles and values, another serious reason urges us to take a stand and quickly in favor of Ukraine in this War: Russia’s revision is blatantly violated, and our open wound is being scratched: the revisionism of Turkey from which we are endangered. How will we ask if we need support from the allies without being the first to offer it to Ukraine?
In this regard, the president of SYRIZA attempted a rehearsal in arguments: Did the EU whistle indifferently when we asked for sanctions in Turkey for Cyprus and the walks of Mount Reitz in the Aegean? We do well and participate in the imposition of severe sanctions on Russia, but the invocation of international law can not be by occasion.
He insisted on the need for direct mediation between Greece and Turkey and for the channels of communication with Tayyip Erdogan to remain open. The Prime Minister did not disagree with this at all, clarifying that he never closed the door to dialogue.
Mr. Tsipras’s statement during his deuterology, that “Greece belongs to the Greeks”, a historical phrase that refers directly to Andreas Papandreou, created a sensation (both Nikos Androulakis and Michalis Katrinis pointed out that KINAL was annoyed) address of internal consumption and does not concern the substance: N.D, SYRIZA and KINAL with individual differences, belong to the same side of the (national) history against the Russian invasion.
