Dog stabbed in Central Park after owner argues

A dog was stabbed in New York’s Central Park on Saturday (17) following a “verbal argument” between dog owners, the New York Police Department said.

The argument started when a couple walking their two dogs encountered a man walking his three dogs in the park, New York Police Officer Antonio Antenucci told reporters. CNN on Monday.

The dogs started fighting and there was a “verbal argument” between the owners as they tried to separate them, he said. The man then allegedly pulled out a switchblade and stabbed one of the couple’s dogs.

No arrests related to the incident have yet been made, Antenucci said.

The injured dog was later put down after a cancerous mass was found during a subsequent ultrasound, the dog’s owner, Brian Cornwell, told the CNN .

“My dog was in a pile of blood”

According to Cornwell, he and his wife went for a walk in the park after dinner with their two dogs, Eli and Sadie.

He said a mini pit bull ran up and tried to bite Sadie, his three-pound pinscher. The pit bull’s owner, who had two other dogs with him, tried to tell the couple that everything was fine, and Cornwell replied that it wasn’t.

“He didn’t like what I said,” Cornwell told the CNN on Monday.

The two men exchanged words before Cornwell said he had tried to defuse the situation. He and his wife started to walk away, but the man followed, Cornwell said.

“Suddenly he was next to me,” Cornwell said. “He was trying to hit me.”

The man had unleashed his three dogs and they were going after Sadie, Cornwell said.

When Cornwell’s wife took Sadie, the dogs began attacking Eli, the couple’s 14-year-old pit bull-German shepherd mix.

“I was trying to get these dogs off my dog,” Cornwell said. “I kicked one of your dogs right away.”

Cornwell said the man was trying to hit him throughout the entire situation, and at one point he said he threw pepper spray at the man, but it didn’t seem to affect him.

During the fight, the collars of the three dogs became tangled around Eli’s neck and collar, according to Cornwell.

“[O homem] I was dragging my dog on the sidewalk in the park, trying to get the leashes and dogs off my dog,” he said.

When the man grabbed a knife, appearing to be trying to cut one of the collars, Eli snarled and the man stabbed the dog, Cornwell said.

“My dog was in a bloody pile,” Cornwell said. “I thought he was going to bleed to death, there was so much blood.”

The man finally got his three dogs together and left the scene before police arrived, according to Cornwell.

Cornwell took Eli to a nearby veterinary hospital, where veterinarians found a cancerous mass after an ultrasound. They estimated that Eli had about five months to live, according to Cornwell.

“I had to make the decision to put him down,” he said. “I didn’t want him to suffer.”

Cornwell said it was devastating to lose Eli, who he rescued about 10 years ago.

“I have dog beds in every room and he’s not there,” he said. “He is the best dog I ever had.”
