A clothing manufacturer in Tokyo has teamed up with vets to create a portable fan for pets, hoping to appeal to dog and cat owners who can’t shave their pets in Japan’s scorching summer.
The device consists of an 80-gram battery-operated fan, which is attached to a mesh suit to blow air around the animal’s body.
Rei Uzawa, president of clothing maker Sweet Mommy, says he came up with the idea after seeing his own pet chihuahua exhausted every time he was taken for a walk.
“There hasn’t been much rain this year, so the hot days came earlier and in that sense I think we’ve developed a product suitable for the market,” she explained.
After the rainy season in Tokyo ended in late June, the Japanese capital experienced the longest heat wave on record, with temperatures as high as 35°C for nine days.
“I usually use dry ice packs [para manter o animal fresco]. But I think it’s easier to walk my dog if we have this fan,” said Mami Kumamoto, 48, who owns a poodle named Pudding and a terrier named Maco.
The device launched in early July, and Sweet Mommy received about 100 orders, Uzawa reported. It comes in five different sizes and costs 9,900 yen ($74).
