Dollar fall boosts demand for international travel

Driven by the fall in the dollar and the reduction of preventive measures for Covid-19 around the world, international destinations are once again gaining preference among Brazilian travelers.

In this scenario, travel companies are already seeing an increase in online searches. Only in the last week, the dollar reached the lowest level in more than two years and closed at R$ 4,746.

At Decolar travel agency, the demand for packages and flights abroad grew by more than 25% this month, compared to February. In relation to the month of January, the growth was 53%.

In addition to the lower price of the dollar, Decolar’s director of flights, Daniela Araujo, highlighted the population’s willingness to travel after the limitations of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“This set of the more favorable dollar price and protocols for Covid-19 explains this optimistic expectation. The demand for packages has gained strength. It is an expressive recovery of the international and there is still no drop in domestic travel in Brazil, precisely because we have a repressed demand of two years of pandemic”, explained Araujo.

On the Kayak travel search platform, a 70% increase in the search for international destinations was recorded between March 5th and 23rd. The country most sought after by Brazilian tourists is the United States.

On both platforms, North American cities Orlando, New York and Miami are among the three most sought after destinations.

For the vice president of the Brazilian Association of Tour Operators (Braztoa), Fabiano Camargo, travelers are taking advantage of the moment to obtain the best prices and anticipate reservations.

“The reflection of this fall in the dollar is that people are now rushing to close trips that were already budgeted or looking for packages. It’s a good time to take advantage. But it is necessary to look at the operators that fix the exchange rate on the day of purchase for hotel reservations, for example”, explained Camargo.

For the project coordinator at Fundação Getúlio Vargas and specialist in tourism, André Coelho, it is still too early to say that the increase in demand for international travel is a trend. In his opinion, it is a temporary move.

“It seems to us a movement of people who already had this intention of traveling in the short or medium term and decided to seize the moment. We already have some reports that indicate that the dollar will return to the level of R$ 5 by the end of the year. So, as much as the dollar makes it easier for Brazilians to go abroad, it is still not stable, it is still a part of the population with a higher purchasing power”, highlighted the FGV coordinator.
