Domestic flight offer surpasses pre-pandemic for the first time, says ANAC

The air transport sector reached numbers close to the levels recorded before the Covid-19 pandemic in May. According to the report by the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC), Brazil, after 27 months, exceeded the number of flights offered.

In the domestic market, the rate of seats per kilometer increased by 6% compared to May 2019. This was the first time, in this segment, that one of the items in the report showed growth in relation to the pre-pandemic period.

Despite the increase in supply, the sector still does not register the same number of paying passengers. On domestic flights, May 2022 recorded 6.4 million passengers. In 2019, more than 7 million people flew through Brazil in the same period.

On international flights, there were more than 1.2 million passengers who traveled in May this year, about 63% of what was transported in the same period in 2019. This was the largest passenger movement since February 2020, the month before the first confirmed case of Covid in Brazil.

In April 2020, ANAC recorded the worst numbers since 2010. There were 400 thousand fewer passengers on domestic flights and 40 thousand people on flights outside Brazil.

Also according to the ANAC report, the transport of cargo and paid mail had, in May, a reduction of 6.1% compared to the same period in 2019. It means a record of just over 36 thousand tons dispatched within the country.

In the international market, the transport of mail and cargo continues to show a record number of transported tons. In May of this year, there were more than 88,000 dispatches on international routes. The data, according to ANAC, indicate the highest result for the month of the Agency’s historical series, which began 22 years ago. Compared to the same period of 2019 and 2021, the indicator increased by 24.7% and 1.8%, respectively.
