Dominican Republic: Gunman storms government building, kills environment minister

Dominican Republic Environment Minister Orlando Jorge Mera was killed by a gunman inside the ministry building, several sources told AFP.

The perpetrator broke into the room where the minister’s weekly meeting with the deputy ministers was taking place and opened fire, according to three sources who asked not to be named.

“We are shocked by what happened,” the ministry said on Twitter, without elaborating.

Local media reported that the gunman had stormed the building and special forces police were called in to locate and arrest him.

Mera was a legal and founding member of the Modern Revolutionary Party. He took over as Minister of Environment and Natural Resources in August 2020.
