Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin show different versions about negotiations

United States President Donald Trump spoke for more than two hours with Russian leader Vladimir Putin about the conflict in Ukraine. After the connection, the two heads of state presented divergent versions about the sequence of negotiations.

After the call, Trump published a long text where he states that the conversation was excellent and that conditions for the end of the war will be negotiated by both parties.

According to Trump, the Vatican would be interested in hosting conversations for peace between Russia and Ukraine.

On the Russian side, the message was shorter and more concise. After the connection with Trump, Putin stated that the conversation was productive and frank, and accepts the negotiation of a memorandum with items that it considers essential – that is, its terms. He also emphasized that a truce will only be possible when “certain agreements are made.”

“The US President expressed his position on ceasefire and I pointed out that Russia is also favorable to a peaceful resolution of the Ukrainian crisis. We should simply determine the most effective ways to move towards peace,” Putin said.

In addition to the meeting with Putin, the Republican also talked to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who asked Trump to impose new sanctions on Russia if the country does not support the ceasefire.

Zelensky also asked Trump to make no decision on Ukraine without the participation of Ukrainians. And asked for a new round of negotiations mediated by European countries.

“We are considering a new meeting with all teams – we would like it to be at a high level: United States, Ukraine, Russia, European countries and the United Kingdom,” Zelensky said.

European Commission Chairman Von Der Leyen, Germany Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italy Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and France President Emmanuel Macron participated in the link between Zelensky and Trump.

After the conversation, von der Leyen thanked Trump for what he called “tireless effort” for the truce in the Ukraine war.

The United States threatened to leave the negotiation table without seeing progress, and now they talk optimistic about an agreement between Russia and Ukraine. Still, neither party explained what may have changed so that negotiations actually happen.

At the same time, Russia maintains attacks on the Ukrainian territory.

This Sunday (18), the Russians have launched one of the biggest drone attacks since the beginning of the war, reaching a residential area and leaving houses completely destroyed.

This Monday (19), two seniors were killed in a rural Kherson, 400 kiev, also for drone attacks.

According to information from the newspaper The New York TimesPutin sent troops from the Russian army to the Finnish border. Using satellite images, tents, jet shelters and vehicle garages were seen at various points near the Finnish territory.

Finland is one of the last countries to enter NATO, officially adopted the treaty in 2023. The country’s government believes that Russian movement does not represent an immediate threat.
