Donald Trump finishes off Huawei in the last hours as president of the United States

In the last days of Donald Trump as president of the United States, the administration has imposed additional restrictions on Huawei and American companies. According to Reuters, the US Department of Commerce has revoked some licenses to sell components to Huawei.

The US Department of Commerce declined to give details to Reuters, saying it will continue to work with agencies and apply policies in a way that “protects US national security and foreign policy interests.”

Donald Trump finishes off Huawei in the last hours as president of the United States

Since 2019, the US government under the Trump administration has viewed Huawei as a national security threat, heavily obstructing the sale of smartphones in the United States and banning carriers from using telecom equipment manufactured by the company. The United States then banned American companies from doing business with Huawei, resulting in Huawei losing its license to use Google services, which negatively affected the company’s sales worldwide, except China. Now American companies can do business with Huawei, but only if they are licensed by the US Department of Commerce.

According to the Semiconductor Industry Association, the US Department of Commerce announced that it “intends to reject a significant number of export requests to Huawei and revoke at least one license.” But sources say there are much more reviews: four companies have eight licenses revoked.

The inauguration of US President-elect Joe Biden will take place tomorrow, January 20. It remains to be seen whether the new president will attempt to ease tensions between the United States and China.
