The president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, was named “Person of the Year” by Time magazine. This is the second time the honor has been bestowed upon him.
The first time the Republican was chosen was in 2016, after his unexpected rise to the presidency. This time, the revelation caps a remarkable return and resurgence in American politics.
Despite the magazine’s dwindling circulation, Time’s “Person of the Year” remains an annual cultural touchstone, and the choice has become something of an obsession for Trump over the years. A Time cover naming him Person of the Year in 2009 hung in several of his golf clubs, The Washington Post reported nearly a decade later, although no such issue was ever printed.
On his old Twitter account, Trump regularly gave his opinion on the annual selection and expanded rumors that it should be him. He criticized the magazine in 2011 for choosing “The Protester” as a tribute to the revolutions breaking out in the Arab world and the Occupy movement in the US.
A year later, he said Time “lost all credibility” because it failed to list him among the 100 most influential people of the year. Trump also especially complained when Taylor Swift won in 2023.
He has often focused on the power the pop star wields and posted “I hate Taylor Swift” on social media this year after she endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris.
