Donmez: Liquefied natural gas will be transported to Cyprus

“LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) will be transported to Cyprus,” Turkish Energy Minister Fatih Donmez told philenews.com, adding that in the first stage they have evaluated the conversion of existing oil-fired power plants into occupied ones for natural gas use.

Speaking after a meeting with “Economy and Energy Minister” Sunat Altun at the 11th Turkish Energy Summit in Antalya, Fatih Donmez said they were cooperating with the pseudo-state on many energy issues.

“We work together in many areas, from hydrocarbons to mineral exploration, from security of electricity supply to electricity conversion. We provide technical support. And today we had the opportunity to reconsider these issues. Especially the transformation of electricity. There is a trend towards more environmentally friendly systems that use less fossil fuels. These days when the Paris Climate Agreement enters into force, each country announces its goals and programs “On the occasion of this visit, we discussed such a program with the Minister,” he said.

In the first stage, the Turkish Minister of Energy continued, “we evaluated the conversion of the existing oil power plants there into natural gas. First Allah LNG will be transported to the island first with the works that will be done. We will provide this clean energy source, industrial and tourism facilities, in particular these power plants “.

Fatih Donmez also said that they watched closely and admired “the domestic electric car developed by the citizens of the TRNC”. “This of course means that the electricity needs on the island will increase. To this end, in the coming years, the balance of supply and demand on the island will be re-examined. The generation facilities will have to be set up accordingly. There may be increases in grid capacity. “Again, the solar potential of the island is quite high. There is a potential of 90 megawatts at the moment,” he added.

“We can work together to increase it even more. We will continue to stand by our compatriots. As the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, we will continue to support the projects that the island needs,” Fatih Donmez said.
