A critical error has appeared in the latest versions of Chrome for Android: after following the link http://../foo (or at https://delroth.net/crash-chrome.html, which serves as a redirect) the browser freezes and / or exits. The worst case scenario is if the user has typed in this URL themselves. In this case, the browser tries to restore the tabs that were forcibly closed as a result of a crash, thereby again going to the above address and once again freezing. In this case, only reinstalling Chrome helps – erasing the cache through system settings or forcefully disabling the browser does not help.
The issue only affects newer versions of Chrome. For example, build 91.0.4472.120 opens a non-existent page without problems, but version 93.0.4577.82 already has a critical error. Chrome build 94.0.4606.61 is also known to crash the browser.
The Chromium devs will probably fix this problem, as it has already been reported in the official bug tracker bugs.chromium.org.
