It’s a holiday season problem that millions of families deal with every year: What to do with the Christmas tree after the fun is over?
A nonprofit organization based in the Midwest has a unique and environmentally friendly solution: donate it to hungry goats.
Urban Growers Collective is accepting undecorated pine Christmas trees at its farm in Chicago, Illinois.
The site currently houses nine Nigerian Dwarf goats, which love to eat the bark, twigs and needles of Christmas trees.
Pine Christmas trees are a nutritious snack for goats, packed with vitamins A and C, according to the Urban Growers Collective.
Farm ambassador Mykele Deville told Reuters: “It helps their digestive tract. Helps prevent parasites. And it’s a way to get rid of your Christmas tree and keep your conscience clear, so you’re not polluting it or throwing it away.”
According to the nonprofit Seaside Sustainability, Americans dispose of about 15 million Christmas trees in landfills each year after the holidays.
