Don’t update Windows 10 and 11: new version breaks VPN

In early January, Microsoft released updates for Windows 10 and 11 as part of Patch Tuesday, which were intended to address some bugs and patch security holes. However, the updates seem to break the system’s built-in VPN (L2TP) tool. At first, Reddit users began to complain about this en masse, and after a couple of days, the media drew attention to the problem, including XDA-Developers and BleepingComputer.

Those who encountered the error (Code 789) report problems with various VPN providers – the problem clearly lies in the new system update, and it seems that the only correct solution is to remove the fresh update using administrator rights. To do this, go to the path “Programs” ➝ “View installed updates”, and then remove the patch with the index KB5009566 (for Windows 11) or KB5009543 (for Windows 10).
