Doria resigns from the government of SP and says he maintains his pre-candidacy for the Presidency

This Thursday (31), João Doria (PSDB) confirmed that he will continue to be a pre-candidate for the Presidency of the Republic this year. In addition, the toucan stated that, in order to remain in the presidential race, he will resign as governor of São Paulo.

The information had already been anticipated by the anchor of the CNN Daniela Lima and policy analysts Iuri Pitta and Renata Agostini.

In this way, who will assume the administration of the state will be the vice governor Rodrigo Garcia (PSDB), who appears as a pre-candidate for the state election to try to keep the PSDB in charge of the São Paulo government.

Doria’s move to continue in the dispute for the presidential succession comes after a part of the PSDB said that the politician was considering staying as governor and running for re-election in São Paulo, thus giving up running for the presidential palace.

The possibility of Doria remaining in the state government was interpreted as an ultimatum that the toucan gave the party, threatening to end all construction of candidates in the largest electoral college in the country and implode all agreements previously made.

Doria was the winner of the PSDB primaries, held last November, to define the party’s candidate for president in October. However, the then governor continued to face resistance from wings of the acronym, mainly from important Tucano figures such as Aécio Neves and Tasso Jereissati.

The governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite, Doria’s opponent in the primaries, also announced his resignation from the state government and is considering being a candidate for other electoral positions, including president, despite having lost the internal dispute to São Paulo. Leite, however, reinforced that he respects the priors held by the party.

Doria even claimed that the PSDB’s attempts to reverse its presidential candidacy would be a “coup”.

Candidate for the Presidency of the Republic

The deadline for politicians to leave office to run for another post in this year’s elections ends this week. Therefore, Doria must formalize his resignation from the government of São Paulo until, at the latest, next Saturday (2).

According to the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), April 2 marks the last date for disincompatibility of candidates for the Presidency. By law, governors, magistrates, state secretaries, ministers and other elective mandate holders must leave their functions so that they can run for other positions.

Despite his performance in the state government being well evaluated in polls, his rejection is great. In surveys of voting intentions for president, Doria fails to take off and appears with less than 5%. Within the PSDB, the politician also faces opponents.
