Down syndrome, inclusion starts with job opportunities

Work is dignity. Respect for the other. This is the message launched by CoorDown (National Coordination of Associations of People with Down Syndrome) with the campaign of international awareness “THE HIRING CHAIN», on the occasion of the World Down Syndrome Day, which is celebrated on 21 March and which this year the association has decided to dedicate to the importance of creating jobs. Why «hiring a person with Down syndrome not only changes the life of the person concerned, but can trigger a virtuous circle of new opportunities for everyone ».

At the heart of the campaign is the video, whose original song “The Hiring Chain” is performed by Sting. In the foreground is Simone, she is at work by the baker who hired her and while she moves casually among the clients a lawyer notices her and decides to hire a boy too and give him a chance. Hence, the chain reaction, to show that the more people with Down syndrome are seen at work, the more they are recognized as valuable employees.

“With this campaign we want to invite everyone, companies, citizens, institutions, to give more job opportunities and to get to know the benefits of inclusion closely” he explains Antonella Falugiani, President of CoorDown Onlus. “ Work, for people with Down syndrome, is as important as it is for each of us. It is a question of ensuring a fundamental right which is also a human need, identical for each individual. Work is an important basis for growth, for becoming adults, for the realization of one’s life, for living independently and for having the opportunities that all the people who work have ».

Equal rights and equal dignity also mean equal opportunity to dream of a future, to be able to build it. “Just as it is important to study, so is the transition into the world of work”, he continues Antonella Falugiani. “Because it allows you to recognize the value of people and have new social relationships, the economic basis that the work gives helps the building of independence and affective relationships».

The invitation for companies and employers is that of Visit the site www.hiringchain.org (created by Adoratorio), where it is possible to get in touch with associations in Italy and in different countries of the world that guarantee information and the support necessary to support the work placements of people with Down syndrome in their companies or activities.

The Hiring Chain campaign – available on the CoorDown YouTube channel was born from the collaboration with the agency SMALL in New York and the invaluable support of Indiana Production. The original piece, performed by Sting, was composed by Stabbiolo Music.
