“Downton Abbey 2” arrives in December

Hugh Bonneville, aka the Earl of Grantham, he had said that Downton Abbey he would be back, we just didn’t expect to see him again anytime soon. The second film dedicated to the Crawley dynasty is, in fact, currently in production and, barring unforeseen events, will arrive at the cinema on December 22nd, a perfect Christmas present to deposit under the English tree. Two years after the release of the first chapter in theaters and six years after the last episode of the TV series, Downton returns, therefore, to the delight of fans and for all those who can’t wait to set foot again at Highclere Castle, reopened for the first time after Covid which delayed the start of filming.

“After a very busy year, separated from family and friends, it is a huge comfort to think that better times await us and that next Christmas we will meet again with the much loved characters of Downton Abbey»Wrote producer Gareth Neame announcing the return of many main characters (and we would like to say).

According to what was anticipated, the second film, which will count on a script written once again by the showrunner Julian Fellowes, will surely see the return of Hugh Bonneville, the breadwinner, of Laura Carmichael as Lady Edith, and Michelle Dockery in those of Lady Mary. There should also be no doubt about the rest of the cast, even if the only – worrying – defection could be that of Maggie Smith, that we may not see again in the role of Lady Violet. If the 86-year-old actress had explained that she has no intention of retiring and that she wants to continue lending faces to old and curmudgeon women until she has a worthy script in her hands, this time things could be a little more complicated both for the ending of the first film, which hinted that Lady Violet would leave the scene, and for Covid-19 which, also due to age, could lead her not to expose herself to the dangers associated with returning to the set.

Meanwhile, the new film, which will be directed by Simon Curtis, will count on quattro new entry: Hugh Dancy, the husband of Claire Danes whom we have seen in films such as I love shopping e Hysteria; Laura Haddock, one of the protagonists of White Lies; Nathalie Baye, winner of the César Award for the film Spied on her by Bob Swaim; is Dominic West, the protagonist of The Affair ended up in the eye of the storm because of the alleged betrayal with Lily James, launched by Downton Abbey, and which we will see in the fifth season of The Crown in the role of Prince Charles. In short, waiting for further details – the plot of the film is still top secret – we just have to hope that Downton Abbey lives up to expectations by taking us back to Yorkshire with that sparkle we have so missed.
