Downton Abbey: A new era, what we know so far about the second film

The Crawley family is delighted to welcome the public (again) to the family estate. The occasion? Downton Abbey 2: A new era, the second film to be released in theaters on March 18, 2022. The teaser comes only a few days after the first official trailer, which in British cinemas will anticipate the release of Belfast, Kenneth Branagh’s biographical gem, just seen at Rome Film Festival.

History

The costume jewel Downton Abbey, born on TV from the pen of Julian Fellowes, kept the audience company for six seasons. Immediately after, right where the story had stopped, he made the leap from the small to the big screen: the first film, in fact, broadened the horizons of the protagonists by inviting the Queen herself to the sumptuous and aristocratic English estate.

The story alternates the events of the noble family of the Earl of Grantham (Hugh Bonneville) with those of the colorful humanity of the lower floor of the estate, dedicated to servants. At the beginning of the story alongside the aristocratic traditionalist Robert we find his wife Cara, American and therefore more open-minded (Elizabeth McGovern) and their three daughters. But most of all the countess mother Violet, played by the extraordinary Maggie Smith.

He teaser

From what can be deduced from the first teaser of the second film (the first has grossed 237.9 million worldwide), the pivotal event of the story directed by Simon Curtis is a wedding. To get married again is Tom (Allen Leech), the former family driver who married the eldest daughter Lady Sybil (Jessica Brown Findlay), who later tragically passed away.

Since then, the man has lived with their little girl on the estate, but has never opened his heart again, at least until now. The future bride is Lucy Smith (Tuppence Middleton), a character who first appears in the Brit saga during the events of the first film. As the maid of Lady Maud (Imelda Staunton), the Queen’s lady-in-waiting, the young lady runs into Tom while staying in the castle.

The new age

From the image taken by the photographer after the ceremony, fans immediately noticed the great absence of Maggie Smith, but – do not worry – the actress will return and continue to amaze the public. The happy event, the beginning of a new era, in short of a new chapter, takes place towards the end of the Twenties, when the world is on the threshold of great changes and of the modern era. Among the highly anticipated new entries also Laura Haddock, in a very elegant and refined version, that of Myrna Dalgliesh, who joins Dominic West, Hugh Dancy and Nathalie Baye. But the Academy Award-winning creator and writer promises the surprises have just begun…
