At least 50 people were killed and dozens were injured from two explosions that occurred near a cemetery in Iran where a ceremony was being held to mark the fourth anniversary of the assassination, in 2020, of the top Iranian military commander of Guards of the RevolutionsKasem Soleimani.
Soleimani was killed in an attack by a US drone, according to Iranian state media.
Iranian state television reported a first and then a second explosion during the ceremony in the southeastern city of Kerman with dozens of victims. Chaos and panic ensued.
The semi-official Nournews news agency reported that “gas cylinders exploded on the road leading to the cemetery”. A local official, speaking to Iranian state media, left open to the possibility that this is a terrorist attack.
State television showed Red Crescent rescue workers tending to the wounded at the ceremony, where hundreds of Iranians had gathered for the anniversary of Suleimani's death. Some news agencies reported that at least 50 people were injured.
“Our rapid response teams are evacuating the wounded… But there are crowds blocking roads,” Reza Fallah, head of the Red Crescent in Kerman province, told state television.
