Dozens of people were arrested for allegedly calling for demonstrations on May Day at Taksim Square in downtown Istanbul. Following the demonstrations at Gezi Park in 2013, which began at Taksim Square, the government’s mobilizations are banned in that square. Those detainees are accused, among other things, of belonging to left -wing extremist organizations, the Turkish news agency Anadolu said today. According to the agency, 76 people have been arrested and a total of 84 suspects are sought. In previous years, authorities have made numerous arrests and clashes between the police and the protesters in relation to the demonstrations of Labor Day. Taksim Square is symbolically important for trade unions and opposition. Trade unions wanted to honor the May 1977 May, when snipers opened fire at a massive gathering of about 500,000 protesters, killing many people. Source: RES
