The bodies of at least 20 civilians were found strewn across the streets of the city of Bucha, northwest of Kiev, after the withdrawal of Russian forces from the area in shocking images released on Saturday (2).
The dead, all in civilian clothes, were found in a variety of awkward poses, some face down against the pavement, others up with their mouths open.
“Three of them are trapped on bicycles, while others, with waxed skin, fell next to cars hit by bullets and crushed,” according to journalists who arrived in the city after nearly a month.
Bucha Mayor Anatoliy Fedoruk said the dead civilians had received inhumane treatment at the hands of Russian forces.
“Bodies of executed people still line up in Bucha. Their hands are tied behind their backs with white ‘civilian’ rags, they were shot in the back of their heads. So you can imagine what kind of lawlessness they perpetrate here,” Fedoruk told Reuters on Saturday.
On social media, Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak said the bodies of the men found with their hands tied “were shot dead by Russian soldiers”.
Podolyak added: “These people were not in the military. They didn’t have weapons. They posed no threat. How many other cases of this kind are happening right now in the Occupied Territories?”
THE CNN failed to independently confirm the details of the men’s deaths.
Russian forces have withdrawn from several cities near Kiev in recent days after Moscow’s attempt to encircle the capital failed, with Ukraine declaring that Bucha had been “liberated”.
