Dozens of turtle puppies are found dead on the coast of Piau

About 50 puppies of turtles died shortly after spawning on the beach of the girl, in the municipality of Luís Correia, on the coast of Piauí.

The animals were found dead on the track, and some even invaded the terrace of a residence. The resident called the Delta Turtles Institute, responsible for the identification and protection of the nests. The institute’s team pointed out that the puppies were attracted to the lights and moved toward the continent, where they died for dehydration.

“This is a negative scenario caused by light pollution, one of the main threats to sea turtles during spawning. Any kind of light attracts the animals, but white light further aggravates the situation,” explained Werlanne Magalhães, biologist and vice president of the institute.

Excessive luminosity disorients both females and turtle puppies. The nest was not monitored by the project. The institute ruled out the possibility that the deaths were caused by criminal action and recalled that similar occurrences have already been recorded on the state coast, which has about 66 km long, the smallest in Brazil.

“The girl’s breast beach is the one that has the most problems, because, during high tide, turtles reach the grass area, making it difficult to identify the tracks. They do the spawning, and the puppies are attracted by the lights. Recently, even turtles were run over,” said Werllane Magalhães.

The biologist emphasized the importance of respecting spawning areas, as these animals play essential roles in environmental balance, such as maintaining the food chain, which in turn helps to avoid incidents with sharks towards humans.
