DR Congo: M23 guerrillas announce unilateral ceasefire

The guerrillas of the March 23 Movement (M23) declared a unilateral ceasefire after days of clashes with government troops in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a spokesman said.

The M23 Movement says it is seeking dialogue with the government and has withdrawn its forces from the battlefield to avoid further clashes with government troops.

The government spokesman and the Ministry of Defense of the Democratic Republic of Congo were not immediately available for comment, according to Reuters.

Fierce fighting erupted last Monday after M23 insurgents attacked government positions near the Ugandan-Rwandan border and continued to advance, forcing thousands of civilians to flee their homes.

The rebels had occupied large swathes of territory during the 2012-2013 uprising, before being driven out by the Congolese army and UN forces. However, they returned from neighboring countries where they had found refuge and began to launch new attacks.

M23 spokesman Willie Ngoma said his forces were acting defensively, accusing government troops of conducting operations against them.

Efforts have been made in recent years to persuade the guerrillas to lay down their arms, but the Movement’s leaders denounce the slow implementation of a peace agreement.
