Drag Race Italy, the final: that’s who won

Elecktra Bionic wins the crown and scepter of Italy’s first drag superstar. Luquisha Lubamba conquers the Wella sash of Miss Simpatia (the homegrown version of Miss Congeniality). This time, to tell the sixth and last episode of the first edition of Drag Race Italia (on Discovery +) we start from the end. How did these two competitors come to win in the most rigged race of the year over their rivals Le Riche and Farida Kant?

Let’s rewind the tape and start over from the beginning of the episode to retrace all the stages of thecoronation (well deserved), which gives the winner a year as MAC ambassador as well as a limited edition line of cosmetics bearing her name.

From 9 January the talent arrives on Real Time with six episodes and specials After the race. The stars have aligned in the meantime and so on 23 December, the date of the airing of the final, it is also the birthday of Priscilla, RuPaul’s heir in the show, judge together with Chiara Francini and Tommaso Zorzi. Meanwhile the producer for Ballandi, Dimitri Cocciuti, won the Cinemagia Award 2021, which took place a few days earlier in Rome. And, during the live broadcast on the Clubhouse of Club Drag Race, he also teased that, to avoid spoilers about the winner, the production recorded four coronations. So none of the finalists know for sure until airing whether they won or not.

Singular, however, the primacy of Elecktra Bionic: the 27-year-old from Turin has never won a maxi challenge so far, but it has taken the title directly home. And she could also be chosen among the contestants of the first season of UK Versus the World, to win the title of Global Drag Race Superstar.

The creative genius of RuPaul, creator of the program and probably the most famous and powerful drag queen in the world, has produced this new competition to decree a sort of Miss World in a drag version. However Mamma Ru, as her squirrels in the competition call her, has already given her blessing to the Italian finalists by sending together with her friend and judge Michelle Visage a video message in our language with a thunderous “Ciao belle!”.

Before reaching this surprise, however, the final poker struggled a lot. It all started with one of the broadcast’s classic mini-challenges, the Reading Challenge, complete with a rainbow microphone. It is a competition with shots of arrows on the opponents and, having won the Wickedness Award 2021, Elecktra Bionic has already started the episode with the best wishes.

Luquisha Lubamba climbed onto the golden cube after taking off her slippers and remaining with white socks in the balance (“I suffer from vertigo,” he said with his usual candor). Too bad that she was the only one laughing at her jokes or, to put it in the words of Farida Kant, she is a “cross between BOH and MAH”. And the queen retorted: “I’m not as bad as they describe me.”

The maxi challenge of the episode, on the other hand, followed the tradition of the format: the queens had to write a verse of RuPaul’s song A little bit of love to then sing it and dance with the help of the choreographer Attila, a team of dancers (including Tommaso Stanzani, boyfriend of Tommaso Zorzi) and the four competitors eliminated. Ivana Vamp, Ava Hangar, Divinity and Enorma Jean didn’t show great fair play, not only for the feignedly friendly atmosphere created on the catwalk but also for the constant jokes towards the finalists.
