The Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, During a press conference he mentioned the need to change the rules of the European Stability Pact.
More specifically, answering a question from APE-MPE, the head of the Italian government stressed that the European Commission will present an “idea” (to change the Stability Pact) which will contain the proposals of all countries of the Euro and perhaps of the Union as a whole, we will have to find out.
The goal is to find consensus on a set of rules. The debate is expected to continue throughout 2022. It is a little early to say – in detail – what exactly we will do, but I think there are reasons why I do not think it is realistic to stick to the rules of the past.
Even better, I find it unrealistic to stick to the same rules of the past as the current financial and economic infrastructure within the European Union.
A phase of reflection and elaboration will begin and then we will reach a joint decision. “There may be differences of opinion between the different countries and this is, of course, part of the negotiation, which will begin towards the end of the year.”
“The presence of the public in Europe is necessary”
At the same time, answering a relevant question of the Italian press, Mario Draghi stressed that “he believes that the future economic policy of Germany will depend not only on the new German Minister of Finance, but also on the Chancellor and the entire new government.” As for the whole of Europe, he added that “sectors such as health – with vaccinations – and climate change, show the need for public presence.”
The Italian technocratic prime minister, finally, expressed his satisfaction with the course of his country’s economy. According to his government’s forecasts for this year, the country’s GDP is expected to increase by 6%, the deficit / GDP ratio to 9.4% and the debt / GDP ratio to 153.5%. Last year, it had risen to 155.6%.
“It is clear that we will be able to reduce the debt through economic growth,” Draghi said.
Mario Draghi also said that Italy, as the G20 presidency, would hold an emergency summit on Afghanistan on October 12.
