Draghi hurriedly returns from NATO Summit due to tensions with the 5 Star Movement

Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi has decided to return earlier than planned by the NATO Summit in Madrid. Italy will be represented by the Minister of Defense Lorenzo Guerini in tomorrow’s work.

According to converging sources, the cause is the tensions in the last two days with the Five Star Movement (M5S).

According to sociologist Domenico De Mazi, M5S founder Bebe Grillo informed him that Mr. Draghi had asked him to oust Giuseppe Conte from the movement’s leadership.

Sources in the Italian government have categorically denied this.

Last Wednesday night, President Sergio Matarella had a meeting with Mr. Conte.

Mr Grillo’s statement and the manner in which it was conveyed upset the Italian government.

It remains to be seen whether the technocratic prime minister’s relations with the M5S and with Giuseppe Conte himself will be restored.

Mr Conte spoke of the prime minister’s “serious involvement” within the movement. However, Prime Minister Draghi assured that “they spoke on the phone and began to resolve the misunderstanding.”

Following the recent departure of Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio and 61 other lawmakers and senators from the M5S parliamentary group, the movement’s participation and support in the government is no longer considered crucial.

The cabinet is expected to meet today to approve new measures to support households and businesses affected by rising energy prices.
