Draghi: ‘Italy was never strong when it decided to go it alone’

Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, in his speech today at the “International Meeting for the Friendship of Peoples” held in Rimini, referred to the main points of his government’s action and the importance of stability and reliability for the future of Italy, while he emphasized that “the path we must follow consists of social justice, development and sustainability of the public economy”.

The head of the government in Rome avoided specific references to the election campaign underway in Italy, but wanted to underline that “isolationism and protectionism do not coincide with the national interest of the country”. At the same time, he recalled that “Italy was never strong when it decided to go alone”, and that “his country needs a strong Europe and Europe a strong Italy”.

“The majority of Italians have long been waiting for the necessary reforms and investments to be made. The Recovery and Resilience Plan is of primary importance for our credibility,” the former president of the European Central Bank stressed. Mario Draghi reiterated that his country unreservedly supports Ukraine, “which is a free and democratic country” and that his government continues to support, without any hesitation, the adoption of a ceiling on the price of natural gas.

Finally, the Italian Prime Minister, who was applauded mainly by the young people who attended his speech, underlined that “in the social agenda of his government, the main place was and is the support and dignity of the elderly, the provision of new opportunities for young people and the increase of employment”, while he recalled that “the public deficit did not increase, while Italy’s public debt continues to decrease”.
