Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, during the G7 operations in Germany, referred to the economic consequences of the war in Ukraine.
“We must avoid the mistakes we made after the 2008 crisis. The energy crisis must not lead to a return to populism,” he said.
“We have the tools to achieve this: we need to reduce the effects of rising energy prices, support families and businesses in difficulty, tax companies that make a profit,” added the technocratic Italian prime minister.
Draghi reiterated that it is important to set a price ceiling on energy. At the same time, he explained that “when energy prices fall, we must not return to our energy dependence on Russia, which has characterized the past years.”
“We must end this dependence on Russia forever,” he said.
Finally, in connection with the food crisis, the head of the government of Rome stressed that “Ukrainian cereals should be able to be exported well before mid-September, when the new harvest is ready” and called for the greatest possible support to the UN, with the aim of moving forward and succeeding in its mediation effort.
