The movie “Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero” topped the box office on its debut, exceeding expectations by grossing $21 million from ticket sales in North America.
The work, which is running on 3,007 screens, is supported by production company Crunchyroll, which specializes in Japanese anime in film and television.
The newest installment of “Dragon Ball Super” grossed twice the total of another national weekend release, the Universal thriller “The Beast,” starring Idris Elba.
Facing criticism, “The Beast” opened to a modest $11.5 million in 3,743 North American theaters.
“Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero” is the latest example of an anime-loving audience in the United States, and Crunchyroll, which is primarily parent company Sony Pictures, has conquered the market in North America.
Earlier this year, Crunchyroll movie “Jujutsu Kaisen 0,” which is rated 13+, grossed $17.6 million on its debut.
