DRAM demand in the first quarter of 2021 exceeded expectations in the first quarter of 2021, according to analyst firm TrendForce, as the shift to remote work and learning led to strong demand for laptops.
Demand for DRAM has also been boosted by increased purchases of components by Chinese smartphone brands as these companies, including OPPO, Vivo and Xiaomi, have tried to grab additional market shares after the US blacklisted Huawei to squeeze it out of the global market.
Finally, demand for DRAM from server manufacturers has also gradually recovered.
Taken together, these factors have resulted in higher-than-expected DRAM shipments, despite some component shortages. On the other hand, DRAM prices are also on an upward trajectory in line with previous TrendForce forecasts. Driven by increased shipments and prices, all market players posted revenue growth in the first quarter, bringing DRAM revenue to $ 19.2 billion in the quarter. This is 8.7% more in annual terms.
The market leader is Samsung. The South Korean manufacturer provides 42.0% of all supplies. In second place is SK Hynix with 29.0%. More complete information about the alignment of forces and changes compared to the previous quarter and the first quarter of 2020 is provided by the data from the table prepared by TrendForce:
