Information that Audi plans to equip its new cars with 5G modules in the foreseeable future appeared last year, and now the US office has officially announced a partnership agreement with mobile operator Verizon. Together, the companies plan to fully integrate fifth-generation 5G Ultra Wideband cellular connectivity into the Audi range by 2024 to provide potential buyers with improved software performance, improved navigation, music or video streaming technology, and a host of other potentially useful perks.
For example, by installing powerful cellular antennas in the latest vehicles, Audi can offer the user a more advanced entertainment system without the need to stream content from a smartphone. Moreover, a high-speed connection with a minimum delay will make it possible to implement high-resolution 3D maps that will allow you to navigate the terrain and plan your trip much more efficiently. The manufacturer should also implement the function of cloud storage of driver profiles – this is useful if a person has several vehicles and wants to quickly transfer settings from one car to another.
However, although Audi clearly wants to be the first company in this direction, all major manufacturers want to integrate 5G technology into their cars. Last year, American automotive giant General Motors entered into a similar support partnership with another major cellular carrier, AT&T, to equip Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac and GMC vehicles with fifth-generation cellular network modules by 2024. BMW, Volvo and Ford are working in the same direction, but they plan to integrate the technology only in 2025.
