A video of an app driver in Pennsylvania, in the United States, ejecting a passenger after a racist speech went viral on social media this week. The woman, when getting into the car, says “wow, you are a white guy” and, after being asked what she had said, continued: “you are, like, a normal guy, you speak English”.
The United States also frequently records cases of racism against immigrants, which may explain the “celebration” by an English-speaking driver.
Identified as James W. Bode on social media, the driver refuses to accept the ride, arguing that the speech was “totally inappropriate”. “And if someone of color were sitting here, what would the difference be?” says Bode.
The man accompanying the passenger curses the driver, threatening him and saying that “I should punch him”.
Then, using a racist expression in English, he says that the driver is a “lover of blacks”, in a pejorative way.
According to the recording and publication, the case took place on May 13, around 11 pm, in Catasaqua, Pennsylvania, and the passengers would own the Fossils Last Stand bar, where the race was called.
Bode also explains that he filed a complaint with the police due to the threat he suffered and that he has notices in the car about the recording.
In another post, made the day after the video, the driver claims that what he did should be done “everywhere, always”, by everyone. “Speak up if you are uncomfortable with it, because it makes them [pessoas racistas] uncomfortable, as they should be”, he adds.
