Drone attack leaves 85 dead in Nigeria; president calls for investigation

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday called for an investigation into a military drone attack that killed at least 85 people over the weekend, according to the state emergency agency in northern Kaduna state.

The Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency said at least 85 people died during the attack. The military action targeted criminals operating in the region. The case happened on Sunday night (03).

“The North West Zonal Office has received details from local authorities that 85 dead bodies have been buried so far while searches are still ongoing,” the agency said.

The Nigerian leader, who is attending COP28 in Dubai, said in a statement that the bombing of a village in Tundun Biri was an accident and called the case “very unfortunate, disturbing and painful”.

“The president directs a thorough investigation into the case and calls for calm as authorities look diligently into the accident,” Ngelale said.

The Nigerian army has not yet commented on the case, but the Air Force has denied being involved in the mission that led to last Sunday’s attack (05).

Nigeria’s military, which is backed by the United States and Britain, has been fighting a war against radical groups and has also carried out airstrikes for years in other parts of the country.

Kaduna is 163 km (101 miles) from the Nigerian capital Abuja.

In addition to the war zone in the northeast of the country, the army and air force were called in to face the growing threat from armed criminal groups.
