Heavy rains in central Kenya killed at least 71 people, with floods destroying homes and cars in the town of Mai Mahiu. The government fears the death toll could rise, an official said.
This Monday (29), the Kenya Red Cross said it had taken several people to a health facility in Mai Mahiu following the flash floods.

Excluding the Mai Mahiu incident, government figures indicate that 103 people had been killed and more than 185,000 displaced as of this Monday (29).
Dozens of people have been killed and hundreds of thousands of people displaced by intense rains in other East African countries, including Tanzania and Burundi.
The floods caused widespread damage to infrastructure such as roads and bridges. The region was hit by record floods during the last rainy season at the end of 2023.
