A survey released this Wednesday (29) by the Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV) shows that the technology most present in Brazil in the fight against crime is drones, used by 63% of the public security forces.
The equipment appears in first place among the technological tools adopted. Among the 26 Brazilian states and the Federal District, only nine were not identified as users of this equipment.
The data were presented during a seminar held at the headquarters of FGV, in Rio de Janeiro, with the presence of representatives of the military and civil police of Rio de Janeiro and the State Public Ministry.
Optical character recognition (OCR) is in second place, used by 44% of Brazilian states. The recognition makes it possible to electronically read license plates on highways, for example.
Facial recognition was also highlighted, as it is present in 33% of security devices. On the other hand, body cameras are attached to 22% of the uniforms of security forces agents.
According to Professor Fernanda Prates, one of the coordinators of the study, it is necessary to better understand what are the most effective ways of implementing technologies in the routine of security professionals.
“Now that we understand that there is no going back, and that these tools will be part of these actors’ lives, we want to dialogue with them and also listen to their respective feedback. This dialogue can give rise to new regulations, help institutions, and better understand how to apply these technologies so that they can be used to their full potential”, explained Fernanda.
The unprecedented study was carried out by the FGV Rio School of Law between June 2021 and May 2022, based on analyzes of 2,412 reports and publications with wide circulation in Brazil on the subject.
