Three elderly women died after being run over, on Sunday (29), by a drunk driver on Avenida General Ataliba Leonel, in the Tucuruvi neighborhood, in the north of São Paulo.
According to the police, the driver, aged 19, was arrested in the act for running over Leonilda Aparecida, aged 80, Alcina Franco, aged 82, and Alzira Rodrigues, aged 76. A young woman, also 19 years old, was injured.
According to information from the Military Police, agents from the 3rd Company of the 5th BPM were called to respond to a traffic accident at around 7:15 am. At the scene, they found the injured victims and called the Fire Department, who took two of them to Santa Maggiore Hospital. The third was taken to the Mandaqui Hospital Complex, but none of them survived their injuries.
According to the police, it was discovered that the driver was in a bar with two friends, where he drank alcohol. Returning from the scene, he lost control of the vehicle, invaded the sidewalk and crashed into a tree, hitting the three victims. One of the two passengers in the car, the 19-year-old girl, was injured and was taken to the emergency room, where she remains hospitalized.
Questioned by the police, the driver refused to take a breathalyzer test, popularly known as the breathalyzer test, and was sent to the Legal Medical Institute (IML).
The case was registered at the 73rd DP (Jaçanã) as homicide and drunk driving.
Victims were honored on social media
On social media, tributes were paid to the three victims. Alcina Franco’s 82-year-old grandson published a message on his Instagram lamenting his grandmother’s death.
“Yesterday, we saw each other for the last time, you were happy, with your family, you joked about me being late, as always. We talked about crosswords, my childhood days and how good it was to be with the family together, on such a special date, but today his time on earth came to an end. It didn’t have to be like this, with a crime, but God knows what he’s doing and at that moment you’re in a better place. Praying for us, talking to us and on my side”, says the grandson.
And he concludes: “You will forever be eternal, grandma, your legacy is greater than anything and now you will be happy in heaven, with your grandpa and with your friends,” he wrote.
The Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres church, attended by the three elderly women, also expressed itself online, lamenting the death of the faithful.
“It is with regret that we announce that today our sisters Alcina, Alzira and Leonilda went to our Father’s house”, says the statement. “Let’s pray for God to comfort the hearts of family and friends. May God receive them in the Kingdom of Heaven. We are grateful for all the service they have dedicated to our parish community.”
