In 2023, the month of November went down in history as one of the most extreme ever recorded in Brazil, with high temperatures and exceptional rain events. This year, the opposite is observed in several regions of the country, with the presence of a lot of precipitation throughout the territory.
Last year, El Niño, which is the warming of the waters of the Pacific Ocean, contributed to the occurrence of strong heat waves over Brazil during the month of November.
At the time, the Minas Gerais city of Araçuaí had thermometers reading 44.8°C, the highest temperature ever recorded in Brazil in more than 100 years of meteorological measurements by the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet).
The city of São Paulo reached 37.7°C, the highest temperature for a day in November and the second highest ever observed in the capital of São Paulo since 1943.
Even with the high temperatures, large volumes of rain occurred in the South region. In some places in Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina, it rained almost 600 mm. Some areas of Paraná accumulated approximately 500 mm throughout that month.
THE The opposite is observed, so far, in November 2024 . This month, there is no El Niño, but rather La Niña, which is the cooling of the waters of the Pacific Ocean. Despite this, the sea temperature on the Peruvian coast is slightly below normal, which contributes to the rainfall and temperature pattern in South America at this time of year.
The cooling trend helps to form humidity corridors over Brazil, which cause humid air from the North to the Central-West and Southeast. Furthermore, the cloudiness and rain in the Southeast, Midwest and in some parts of the South prevent the air from heating up excessively.
The rain is expected to continue at least until the beginning of the second half of this month in much of the country. With the large amount of precipitation and clouds, extreme temperatures should take a break.
High temperatures should only be observed during this period in areas in the interior of the Northeast and in Roraima.
