Dual-SIM auto-switching and password rejection: Google releases Android 14 Developer Preview

Google announced the start of public testing of the next major update of the Android operating system – Android 14. Developers have opened access to the installation of the first preliminary version of the Developer Preview with a number of important innovations. First of all, active work continues to improve performance, security and optimization for various devices. But in Android 14 Developer Preview there are more noticeable improvements needed in everyday work.

According to the blog announcement, Android 14 combines Android 12L and Android 13’s tablet and foldable support. Google has updated its guide to building apps for large screens and released additional tutorials. Fresh instructions with galleries will help, for example, to get inspired by tried and tested templates and learn about the right accents in the design of various categories of applications.

The maximum allowed font size has been increased in Android 14. Users will be able to scale the display of text up to 200% – previously the highest value was 130% on Pixel smartphones. It is clarified that this will not lead to cropping of content, there will be no problems with clarity either.

Other changes in Android 14 Developer Preview:

  • Implemented support for passkeys, the new industry standard for passwordless authentication, with automatic synchronization via Google’s password manager and fingerprint login;
  • installation of applications with API level 22 and below is blocked so that malware developers cannot bypass permissions to system functions and other security features of the latest versions of Android;
  • Secure Dynamic Code Loading (DCL) prevents exploits from unexpectedly infiltrating OS and app components — Android 14 requires executable files to be marked as read-only.

In total, two early Developer Preview test builds are planned until March and five beta versions will be released from April to July (subsequently, their number may increase). Starting with the third beta, developers will start working on the stability of Android 14. Compatible smartphones include Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7, Pixel 6a, Pro, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6, Pixel 5a 5G, Pixel 5, and Pixel 4a 5G.
