Facing the cold in Rio Grande do Sul during the last few weeks has not been easy for anyone. With the thermometers approaching negative temperatures, a partnership scene between two friends in the city of São Francisco de Assis has drawn attention.
The photo of the animals sharing a blanket was taken by the manicurist Rose Silva, guardian of the pitbull Zeus. She says that the howler monkey was named “Mochila” and that a few years ago it appeared in the backyard of the house where she lives.
“When I came to live in this house, which belongs to my husband’s family, there were four monkeys. One day we went on a trip and when we got back they weren’t here anymore. We were sad about the situation, missing them”, remembers Rose.
“After a week, Mochila came back alone, but a little injured. He was crying in the tree almost all day and I went to try to take care of him”, he explains.
“I gave him some fruit to eat and he started getting closer to us and trying to play with Zeus. Then, when I saw it, they were both inside the house, since the dog is loose in the yard all day long”, he comments.
The tutor points out that they get along very well and that they never had any problems, the only difficulty is going out for a walk with the dog, since even on the daily walk they want to go together.
“Zeus is very docile, you know? We raised him with great care. I’m very loving and attached to animals, so he’s very tame. He [Zeus] He was never tied up or arrested. When clients arrive to serve here at my salon, he goes along to receive them. So Bugio ends up doing whatever he wants with Zeus, playing and even riding like a horse”, reveals Rose.
Howler monkeys are common in the small municipality of São Francisco de Assis, which is 431 kilometers from Porto Alegre. It’s normal to walk through the city’s central square and find several walking among the trees.
The fact granted Saint Francis of Assis the title of “Querência do Bugio”, a tribute also to the patron saint of the city, known for being the protector of animals.
And so, the friendship between Zeus and Backpack shows that, sometimes, the dog, in addition to being man’s best friend, is also the monkey’s best friend.
