Dutch court convicts two activists for protesting Vermeer’s work

A court in the Netherlands on Thursday sentenced two Belgian activists from the “Just Stop Oil” group to two months in prison after vandalizing the work “Girl with a Pearl Earring” ”, by Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer. One is still on trial.

The act took place last week at the Mauritshuis museum in The Hague. In the video, it shows a man sticking his head to the work while another throws tomato soup at the work and fixing his hand on the wall support. A third protester filmed the scene.

They even shouted asking for the preservation of the environment and policies in favor of people in social vulnerability.

The museum said the 17th-century masterpiece was “intact” and was returned to the public the next day. The Dutch Public Ministry added that the 19th century structure, however, was damaged in the protest.

Last month, protesters from the same group attacked Claude Monet’s painting “Haystacks” with mashed potatoes at the Barberini Museum in Potsdam, Germany. In addition to the case that occurred in the United Kingdom, when two other protesters threw tomato soup on Van Gogh’s “Sunflowers”.
