Duties make the world poorer and more unstable

The successive duties of US President Donald Trump have disturbed world trade and have caused “turmoil” for businesses and consumers. He has changed significantly in his stance, announcing duties to imports from almost every US trade partner and then either freezing or recalling some of them. Legal challenges have added additional disruption. Wherever the duties eventually end up, they will have a great deal of trade. The increase in duties or, at least, their constant threat, weakens trade and destabilizes the economic links that stabilize international relations. By destroying the rules governing trade and ignoring the free trade agreements, Mr Trump has undermined the rules -based international system. This also includes the ignorance of the rules of the World Trade Organization, making it difficult for his work and threatening to leave.
